Review and Giveaway: Cocoa Camino Chocolate
THIS GIVEAWAY IS NOW CLOSED. THANKS TO EVERYONE WHO ENTERED!
As an avowed chocaholic, I can’t help but notice when there’s a new nib in town. When I first started eating along NAG guidelines about ten years ago, there weren’t too many organic, fair trade chocolate companies around. I remember how my naturopath suggested the “new” 70% cocoa bars by Lindt (which were, it’s true, quite yummy). But these days, there’s a plethora of chocolate companies selling delicious, ethical treats. How to choose?

One such company is Cocoa Camino. Based in the Ottawa-Gatineau region of Ontario, Cocoa Camino is part of La Siembra Cooperative, which was launched in 1999. To read more about their humble beginnings and their incredible, ethical business model, its seven guiding principles, and award-winning innovative structure, click here.
Well, trading fairly and good business models may all be well and good, but what does it taste like?
I confess, I’ve eaten my fair (trade) share of Cocoa Camino chocolate bars over the years.
With flavors like matcha green tea (a new love of mine!), caramel crunch, orange (photo courtesy of Cocoa Camino, at left) or chili & spice (chili with cinnamon and ginger), the bars offer a deep semisweet or bittersweet base with some very alluring add-ins. Ah, yes, back in the days when I consumed chocolate bars, I enjoyed these immensely. I also had the opportunity to use some Cocoa Camino cocoa powder and chocolate chips back in September, when I cooked up some sweet treats for the Vegetarian Food Fair. I made chocolate macaroons and butterscotch blondies, both of which were enhanced by the blissful addition of high quality cacao.
More recenlty, I spoke as a panelist at a Women’s Culinary Network event. It turned out that Cocoa Camino reps were at the event as well, introducing their brand-new baking line: 200g (about 3/4 pound) boxes of unsweetened and semisweet chocolate, bags of natural sugars, tins of cocoa powder, and packages of semisweet chocolate chips. I stood in a daze before the table heaving with samples, cursing the ACD for preventing me from trying even one teeny little square.
“Would you like a sample?” the rep inquired.
“Sorry, I’m not allowed anything with sugar in it,” I sniffed.
“Well, how about a piece of the unsweetened baking chocolate? I can assure you, it’s nothing like those squares you buy in the supermarket.” She persisted, “I think you’ll be surprised at how good it is.”
What did I have to lose? I took a bite. It was rich. It was dark. It melted slowly and languidly and easily on the tongue. And–how odd!–it didn’t seem to have a bitter taste at all. The only sensation that that lingered was deep, smooth, intense chocolate. Was it my sugar-deprived taste buds deceiving me? Perhaps. But I knew immediately that this was going to be one of my all-time favorite chocolates, based on that texture alone.
And guess what? I ended up bringing a box of that unsweetened chocolate home with me, and even used it in a few delectable recipes, from truffles to ACD-friendly fudge to marble cake.

[A little slice of marbled heaven]
And now, I’d love for you to try out these wonderful products, too!
Note: Prize Number One is for Canada only; Prize Number Two is worldwide!
Prize Number One:
Cocoa Camino has generously donated a “Cuisine Camino” chocolate and baking package like the one at the top of this post to a lucky reader of Diet, Dessert and Dogs!
Here’s what you’ll get:
- A box of the new unsweetened baking chocolate
- A box of semisweet baking chocolate
- A bag of semisweet chocolate chips
- A cannister of cocoa
- A bag of the new unrefined cane sugar (similar to Sucanat)
Think of all the amazing goodies you could bake up with these ingredients!
Because Cocoa Camino products are available only in Canada, however, the company will ship the package to a Canadian reader only. Sorry!
BUT. . .
Prize Number Two:
I love Cocoa Camino products so much that I’m going to send one of the flavored chocolate bars out to a second reader–and anyone can win this prize, worldwide!
[Update, January 2010: Shannon at Cocoa Camino tells me that Equal Exchange in the US is a partner with their company, and carries a line of chocolates very similar to the Cocoa Camino brand (also Fair Trade and organic). Since they collaborate on ingredients sourcing and recipe development, you'll find equal taste and quality in the Equal Exchange line of products in the US!]
To enter to win either prize, see below.
To Enter:
The giveaway will run until Monday, January 4th, 2010. Just leave a comment at the end of this post telling me your favorite use for chocolate (cooking or eating, that is)
or which flavor of chocolate bar you’d choose from the Cocoa Camino selection. Be sure to specify if you live in Canada or elsewhere (only Canadian residents will be eligible for the baking package; everyone else can win the flavored chocolate bar).
For extra entries (one each), you can tweet, post on Facebook, or post on your blog about the giveaway, or send out an email to an interested party (and copy me at dietdessertdogs AT gmail DOT com). Then, please come back here and leave another comment letting me know each time you’ve done so, so that the entries can be tabulated fairly.
I’ll choose two winners at random after midnight on January 4th and will announce them here the next day. Good luck, all!

American here! My favorite use is cocoa powder in raw pudding, but I’ve never ground my own with a flavored chocolate (it would be out of this world with chili and spice!).
How great you got to be on the panel!
[Reply]
Another American – I usually go with chocolate straight up. I’d love to try the matcha green tea flavor. Thanks for the contest!
[Reply]
American here–I’d love to try the green tea chocolate–wow!
[Reply]
I love to use chocolate in unexpected ways like adding it to chili and spicy sauces for meat. I’m Canadian, had purchsed their hot cocoa before and never knew this company was Canadian!
[Reply]
Canadian! Woo hoo
I made my Mom some chocolate-ginger macaroons on Christmas and she actually swooned. I think that is my current favourite use for chocolate. If it can make my Mom that happy…I’m ready to enter any contest to get us some more.
I love the new coconut flavour of cocoa camino’s choclate bars. I was really impressed when I tasted it at the Vegetarian Food Fair in September.
[Reply]
I sent out a retweet for good measure!
Happy New Year Ricki and to all of the DDD readers.
[Reply]
Wow, so hard to choose my fave use for chocolate! I think I’ll go with the classic choice – chocolate chip cookies!!
[Reply]
CANADA! Woo!
Ooooh, it would have to be making truffles…..OR, or with a big ‘ole glass of red, red, organic wine Mmmmmm.
Thanks Ricki!!
[Reply]
I’m in Canada, and I love chocolate in everything! On its own, in desserts, its a pretty awesome ingredient =D. Happy New Year Ricki!
[Reply]
OH MY GOD!!! I really hope I win! I have seen their hot cocoa around, but not all the other goodies. It just makes all my baking sensors start to tingle with anticipation of all the glorious things I could make. I especially love their emphasis on Fair Trade and organic. I love chocolate so much, but I decided a while ago that I needed to be more aware of Fair Trade and organic issues with my chocolate treats, since they are – after all- indulgences. What a great giveaway. thanks so much to you and to Camino for the opportunity!
[Reply]
I love good chocolate in all its ways (except white chocolate), I can’t choose only one use! A good quality dark chocolate is perfect on its own, with a cup of coffee. Cooking… Maybe Sacher cake!
I’m afraid I’m not Canadian, I live in Spain
[Reply]
wow! I love chocolate too (who doesn’t, right? That rare poor soul I suppose! I pity them but hey, more for us, right?! lol!).
I am in the US and my favorite chocolate so far is hard to say but I really like a local chocolate..Taza with their stone ground mexican chocolate!
[Reply]
I really hope I win this! I love chocolate and this brand looks so good!
[Reply]
What a great sounding company…darn it that I don’t live in Canada! But I would love to try the green tea chocolate bar. It sounds too intriguing to pass up!

Brownies!!! By far my favorite use of chocolate.
[Reply]
How I don’t like chocolate would have been easier to narrow down an answer. Let me think I love chocolate made simply into chocolate milk, non-dairy milk, cocoa powder, stevia and a pinch of salt. So simple so yummy. Easy enough to get a chocolate fix daily if you like.

Oh, i’m in the U.S.

I love chocolate and would eat it any way but I am very fond on chocolate cake not only because it tastes so good but because I love the glossy sheen on melted chocolate before I scoop it into the cake (now you know the sort of cake I mean – not one with a smattering of cocoa)
I thought I would throw my hat in for a matcha green tea chocolate bar – aussie customs are more forgiving of packaged food that has not been opened – although our heat is less forgiving of chocolate at the moment but I just couldn’t resist seeing a giveaway that you say is worldwide
[Reply]
American, although in middle school I was made fun of for having a Canadian Dad.
Simple- a bowl of oatmeal topped with a teaspoon of peanut butter and a piece of melted chocolate. So simple, so delicious, so (keep the chocolate dark) nutritious.
[Reply]
I live in Canada!
My favorite use for chocolate? Hm, I like it so many ways, I really can’t think of a use for chocolate I wouldn’t like! Also, I have yet to meet a chocolate bar I didn’t like (ok, I can think of flavours I wouldn’t enjoy, but none of the Cocoa Camino bars fits in that category!).
(Totally unrelated, but I have to say that I’ve recently seen Cocoa Camino’s new organic and fair trade brown sugar at my food co-op, and that made me extremely happy. I’d been thinking for years that it was a shame we couldn’t find sugar that was both organic and fair trade, much less brown sugar, so seeing that this void has now been filled really made my day!)
[Reply]
I adore Cocoa Camino! I just bought some of the drinking chocolate today, it’s the best.
[Reply]
favorite use for chocolate? sugar free gluten free brownies! So i would love to try out the unsweetened baking chocolate. And the cocoa nibs would be nice for some homemade vanilla chocolate chip icecream (cashew-young coconut based) to top off the brownie with…yum…

My favorite way to have chocolate is in oatmeal!
[Reply]
Reppin’ the USA, I dig the Panama Extra Dark, Caramel Crunch (I hate gooey caramel, so maybe it’ll change my mind!), and Cran & Almond (reminds me of the good ol days of Cadbury)
[Reply]
Another American!
What is odd is that I used to not care for chocolate as a child, but now I love love love dark chocolate!
My favorite way to enjoy chocolate is by having a “tasting” party, and just eating different dark chocolate pieces (>70% cacao) to get a sense of each chocolate’s unique taste. I love how one chocolate can be slightly nutty, one is very roasted, one’s slightly fruity, the other is more vanilly, etc. Chocolate has so much depth to it, that I love to just eat it plain as a treat. (Of course I don’t go over board, I savor small pieces, that way to cleanse the pallet and not overload the mouth.)
I love Equal Exchange and Endangered Species chocolate the best, and I’ve tried a lot, but these Cocoa Camino chocolates sound delicious! I think I would like to try the Bittersweet (71%) or Panama Extra Dark (85%). The Matcha Green Tea and Chili & Spice sound soooo interesting though!
[Reply]
Canadian here!
My favourite use for chocolate is just plain eating!
[Reply]
I love chocolate and the Cocoa Camino chocolate looks heavenly! I love just to eat it after dinner for a special treat. If I could have a Cocoa Camino chocolate, I would choose the matcha green tea or chili spice because it those sound like unique flavors, or I would choose just extra dark 85% chocolate because I like dark chocolate!
[Reply]
I am Canadian and love to eat chocolate on its own or in baked goods. I usually have 3 or 4 squares at around 3:00p.m…everyday…a couple of squares a day keep the doctor away

Happy New Year from IL, USA. I would love to try the cranberry and almond bar. My favorite way to enjoy chocolate is straight up, but I had some brownie bites dusted in bittersweet cocoa powder this week that were addicting…
[Reply]
Canadian in the US here! My new favorite use of chocolate is a chocolate cake covered with vegan chocolate frosting made with coconut oil. Although I’m equally happy eating it straight up! I’ll take any of the dark chocolate bars, since no dairy for me. Happy New Year!
[Reply]
Thanks for another great giveaway! My current obsession is coconut fudge, holy moly good!
[Reply]
Ooh, those chocolate bars looks delicious – I would definitely have to try the matcha green tea flavour – yum! (am in the UK)
[Reply]
Canadian here! My favourite use of chocolate has to be eating it, with a cup of hot cocoa on the side. A good chocolate mousse comes a close second too. I love cocoa camino hot chocolate, but of they’re selection I’d love to try the caramel crunch. Thanks for the contest and Happy New Year!

I think you’ve made an addict out of me… I’d just love to get my hands on more of this amazing chocolate! I can really see why you’re such a fan. If I could have my pick, I would definitely want to try the mint chocolate bar… You know how I feel about mint and chocolate.
But oh, the matcha sounds amazing, too!
(PS, will be tweeting about this in approximately 60 seconds…!)

Hello! I am from Washington state. My favorite use for chocolate would have to be raw chocolate brownies! They are totally sugar and gluten free, but taste like the most decadent dessert on earth!
I want the panama extra dark chocolate! My favorite chocolate in the U.S. is one that is 88%–so the 85% panama would be my pick!
[Reply]
this Canadian loves making chocolate truffles – so yummy!

NJ resident here…although your giveaways always make me wish I were a bit farther north, haha. I visited Canada this past summer could that count? Maybe? No? *Sigh* Okay fine.
My favorite use of chocolate is just plain eating it. I would definitely choose the matcha green tea bars. Btw, I love that the model on the page with all the different flavors is taking a big bite out of that bar, not just a little nibble!
[Reply]
my favorite thing to do with chocolate is pair it with nut butter
in baking or just as dessert!
i’m intrigued by the matcha bar, as I have been meaning to play with a little matcha i picked up…

I’m an American currently living in Ireland, and I miss the chocolate from back home!! Not so into the chocolate here, but I did manage to wrangle together the ingredients to make Buckeyes for Christmas this year. If you haven’t had them…google a recipe ASAP! They are amazing! Sadly, they’re not so appreciated here. The Irish don’t use peanut butter very much, so they couldn’t get into the taste of buckeyes. Sad for them, but all the more for ME!!!!
Thanks for the chance at this one!

I love dark chocolate – & i’ve been buying only Camino chocolate since i found it 3 years ago (its fair trade as well as being organic; and its good tasting as well). So i’d be very happy to win the “Cuisine Camino” package – i could have my almost daily piece of chocolate (a bar usually takes me 2 weeks to eat – and its the only sweet of the day) as well i would have cocoa for making my uncooked date/nut/chocolate bars (for when the chocolate bar would be finished). My choice of bar would be Panama Extra Dark, since i’ve never seen it, nor tried it obviously. And the fair trade sugar would also make my day – i’ve been buying mostly fair trade sugar (if i cant find it then i go for organic one) in the last year or so (see the documentary “The Price of Sugar”).
oops forgot to mention i’m from cnd.
