Review and Giveaway: Baking Kit from iHerb

[Naturally sweetened, organic dried blueberries]
The contest is now closed. Thanks, everyone, for entering!
When I was contacted recently by Abby of iHerb to sample some of their products, I wasn’t sure what to expect. On first glance, the site looks as if it offers mostly supplements, vitamins, and other natural health-related products. But then I spied the “Grocery, Food” category link.
In fact, iHerb is an online distributor of natural health supplements, nutrition-oriented products, and whole, organic and natural foods. They offer a huge selection of brand-name products from a wide variety of companies, many of which I already recognized and use in my home. The company also provides a great money-back guarantee and savings for first-time customers (see below). And–something I thought was really cool–they link to “the only free non-commercial encyclopedia of nutritional and herbal supplements online” (which you can find here).
After more than half an hour on the site, I was still browsing! With so many choices of great food items, it was hard to decide–but my heart kept calling out for baked goods. Healthy baked goods, that is. Gluten-free and ACD-friendly baking can be difficult–and expensive.
How great would it be, I thought, if I could provide a full baking kit of ingredients for a DDD reader? And so, here’s what I ended up with–and what you can win:

Does that look great, or what?!
The kit contains:
- Bob’s Red Mill wholegrain teff flour
- Bob’s Red Mill brown rice flour
- Bob’s Red Mill whole amaranth flour
- Eden Organic naturally sweetened dried blueberries
- Stevita liquid stevia, chocolate flavor
- NOW Foods virgin coconut oil
- Navitas Naturals yacon syrup
Just think of all the amazing goodies you could make with those yummy, healthy ingredients!
Here’s a bit more about the products:
Eden Organics is a well-known staple in many vegan and health-conscious households for their beans, vegetables, condiments, and, of course, Edensoy beverage (their Carob flavor is one of my all-time favorites). I’d never seen dried blueberries that are naturally sweetened (with apple juice) before, so I knew those would be tops on my list!
Bob’s Red Mill products make regular appearances in my kitchen as well, and I appreciate the high quality and variety (they were one of the first companies to offer certified gluten-free oat flour, for instance, as they produce their GF flours on dedicated machinery). I use brown rice flour a lot and all-purpose GF flour on occasion, but I’d never tried teff or amaranth flour; I was very happy with the results. The amaranth lends a slightly nutty flavor to those blueberry muffins I baked, and teff adds a subtle hint of chocolate or carob.

[Lemon-Blueberry Muffins made with amaranth flour, brown rice flour, stevia and dried blueberries]
I’m also very familiar with NOW Foods, both because I’ve used a few of their supplements (such as grapefruitseed extract, important for anti-candida diets) and their stevia (which is considered an “herbal supplement” in Canada). Since I bake with coconut oil fairly frequently, I was glad to see that NOW offers it as one of their products as well. And as I’ve mentioned in various comments on blogs I read, I’ve been dying to try yacon syrup since I first heard about it–but it’s not yet available in Canada. So the inclusion of a jar of Navitas Naturals yacon syrup was a real treat for me! (I’m still deciding what I can whip up with it).
As soon as I received my package, I got to baking! I’ve made muffins, cupcakes, and cookies so far–and all have been a hit.

[Carob-Orange Cookies made with teff flour, brown rice flour and stevia]
Here’s your chance to give stevia-sweetened, healthy desserts a try (or, if you’re not into baking, give each of the individual ingredients a try on their own). If you’ve ever been curious about some of these natural alternative ingredients, this is a great way to experiment!
I’ll be giving away a package filled with the same healthy baking kit I received, pictured above!
Contest is open to US and Canadian residents. Contest closes on Wednesday, December 16, 2009 at midnight.
Here’s How to Enter:
1. Leave a comment on this page telling me what product you’d like most to try. Skip on over to the iHerb main page to take a look. (And if you decide to buy something while you’re there, first-time customers can save $5.00 by using the promotion code BUY 123).
2. To gain extra entries (one each), do any or all of the following: tweet about this giveaway on twitter, link to it on your blog, mention it on Facebook, etc. Then leave another comment here letting me know you’ve done so.
Contest will remain open until Wednesday, December 16 at midnight, after which I’ll choose a winner at random. I’ll post the winner the next day.
Good luck, and happy baking!

Oh my goodness! What an awesome giveaway! I would love to try the teff or amaranth flour and yacon syrup. I have been experimenting with different grain flours like brown rice and quinoa, but haven’t tried teff or amaranth yet. Also, I have heard a lot about yacon syrup, but again have not tried it, but would absolutely love to!
I’d love to try the yacon syrup and amaranth flour! Thanks so much for the giveaway and lovely blog.
This looks like a great baking kit – your cookie & muffin creations look quite tasty as well. I would love to try the teff flour as I’ve heard good things. I like iHerb – they have some great products!
Awesome! I’ve always wanted to try cooking with coconut oil because I keep reading about how great it is. I imagine it probably tastes heavenly in baked goods as well. I am also always interested in experimenting with new flours. Yum!
The yacon syrup sounds totally intriguing!
I am a huge coconut oil fan. Pan sauteing brussel sprouts with it is fabulous!
I would love to try the Stevita liquid stevia, chocolate flavor. I love stevia but I have never tried chocolate!
I would like to try the yacon syrup!
I would love to try the yacon syrup!
I’ve also gotta say trying yacon syrup would be AWESOME. I only recently found it in the store and I just couldn’t justify the price, but it sounds so intriguing… and would help me make some raw recipes I’ve been eyeing lately!
I really want to try Yacon syrup
I would love to try the cacao nibs!
i’ve used teff and brown rice flour before, but never amaranth. it’s actually on my to-buy list so i’d love to have it. thanks!
I want to try yacon syrup! A-K and I were talking about this but yowza, the price!
Yum, what a great giveaway! I’m gluten free so I’ve tried most alternative flours (though not amaranth!), but the price of everything keeps me from baking a lot of the time – it would be great to win this!
I’ve been curious about xylitol – I’d love to try it out. What a great giveaway!
Best giveaway EVER!
I love Bob’s cereal products but never tried their alternative flours so I’d be most excited to experiment with those.
I’d love to try the chocolate flavored liquid stevia. I’d love to try that in my morning coffee.
I’d like to try the teff flour and yacon syrup. I’ve gotten used to using stevia, but would love an ACD “ok” sweetner other than stevia at times.
I’ve been wanting to get my hands on teff flour for ages!
I’d love to try the Yacon syrup because I have a recipe that calls for but can never find it! Now I know where it’s been hiding! I’ve ordered from IHerb before. They’re great!
All of that looks so yummy. I love the Bobs Red Mill products. This could whip my baking season into a frenzy!
WOW What a great package. Thank you for the chance to win this. Bob’s red mill rocks and ive always wanted to try coconut oil. Have a great day.
I’m really curious about teff and amaranth flours, so they’d be high on the list of things I’d want to try. But I must say that organic dried blueberries are up there too!
Chocolate Stevia….Yum!
TEFF FLOUR! I’m constantly searching for the perfect injera recipe. It must be out there!

Oops, posted on the wrong page. Tweeted: https://twitter.com/vijita_cooks
Thanks, Abby for another great contest idea. I’ve seen all these products at my local health food store but they are so expensive I’ve passed them by. As you may know I recently went vegetarian and I’m looking for new ideas in the kitchen. I would love to try any of the flours and also the coconut oil as I’ve heard it doesn’t break down to trans fat. Really, I would love it all!
)
I would love to try the dried blueberries. All the dried blueberries I have found have been sweetened with sugar.

Thanks for this great offer!
This is an amazing giveaway, Ricki! I’m drooling over all the ingredients I can’t afford!
I’ve been wanting to try Teff flour but haven’t been able to justify the purchase!
wow!! what a wonderful giveaway! This year I have started learning a lot more about Gluten free and sugar free cooking for my cousin, who was diagnosed with celiac. She’s already vegan, but she has been struggling with what to eat. I’d love to bake her some goodies with all this stuff – so I’m especially excited about those flours. I’ve never used Teff or Amaranth flour before. Or yacon syrup! such goodies.
I can’t wait to try these ingredients. I just love love love blueberries.
great giveaway! i’d love to try yacon syrup!! i’ve only had it once in a raw restaurant!
and i tweeted
Teff or amaranth flours, or yacon syrup. I’ve never seen them around here.
How cool is this?! I have been dying to try the NuNaturals, Vanilla Stevia, Pure Liquid, Concentrated Extract forever, but have not because of the price tag.
I don’t have a blog or a twitter or facebook account…can I tell my friends the old fashioned way (you know, *talking* to them…terribly un-cool, I know
) for extra entries, lol?! See…that tells you how much I want to try the stevia product, haha!

Ooh yacon syrup has been on my list of things to try for a while now but it seems kind of hard to find and kind of pricey just to test it out. Also, those blueberries sound fantastic, now if only products like that would become more mainstream!

I keep hearing about coconut oil. I’d love to see how that works, but it’s not sold at our grocery store!
Oh sweeeet giveaway! What a great site, I’m swimming in the Bob’s Red Mill awesomeness. I might have to pick myself up some Vital Wheat Gluten and Quinoa Flour, both of which I’ve never tried. As far as the products in this pack, the flours would get good use but I’d be most excited about trying out the coconut oil.
I also posted this on the Ordinary Vegetarian fan page on Facebook. Also just noticed that you have two event closing dates posted at the bottom of the post, one says closing Monday and the other Wednesday.
I love iherb, they still surprise me with something new I didn’t know they sold. Never knew they sold Yacon syrup and would love to try that.
Thank you for the ideas! I need to try the lemon-blueberry muffins! I love stevia as a sweetener for tea and want to learn how to use it for baking.
I also tweeted your wonderful giveaway!
