Festive Freebies 2: Reader’s Choice Cookbook Giveaway
[Tis the season for gift-giving--and I'm thrilled to be able to share with my readers! I've got several delicious giveaways planned between now and the end of the year. Happy Holidays!]

[Which would be your choice? Maybe none of these? That's okay, too!]
I know that not everyone enjoys the same kinds of recipes that I do, so I thought it would be fun to give away a cookbook to someone and let the winner choose what s/he would like (as long as it’s available on amazon, that is).
I’ve compiled a short list of cookbooks that I own, love, or covet. Let me know which of these you’d like to win–or even one that’s not on this list–and I’ll send the winning commenter the cookbook of her/his choice via amazon (and while you may not receive it just in time for Christmas, it will make a great start to the new year in your mailbox!).
Here’s my list of top choices, in alphabetical order:
- 100 Best Vegan Baking Recipes by Kris Holechek
- 500 Vegan Recipes by Celine Steen and Joni Marie Newman
- Becoming Vegan by Brenda Davis and Vesanto Melina (primer with some recipes)
- Clean Food by Terry Walters
- The Conscious Cook by Tal Ronnen
- Eat, Drink and Be Vegan by Dreena Burton
- Enlightened Eating by Caroline Marie Dupont (one of my former teachers at nutrition school–great resource book/cookbook)
- Go Dairy Free by Alisa Marie Fleming
- The Ice Dream Cookbook by Rachel Albert-Matesz
- My Sweet Vegan by Hannah Kaminsky
- Quick and Easy Vegan Comfort Food by Alicia Simpson
- Sweet Freedom by Ricki Heller (what kind of author would I be if I didn’t include my own book in a list of favorites?)
- The Urban Vegan by Dynise Balcavage
- Vegan Brunch by Isa Chandra Moskowitz
- Vegan Soups and Hearty Stews for All Seasons by Nava Atlas
- Vegan Yum-Yum by Lauren Ulm
To win, simply leave a comment at the bottom of this post telling me which book you’d like, and why.
Contest is open worldwide.
The giveaway window is fairly short–only until midnight, December 24th–so get those entries in and spread the word! After the 24th, I’ll choose a winner at random and announce it on the blog on the 25th. Merry Christmas!
Extra entries can be earned through any of the following (then come back here and comment again to let me know you’ve done so):
- Post on your own blog
- Send an email to someone who’d be interested in entering, telling them about this giveaway–and either forward or cc me at dietdessertdogsATgmailDOTcom (but don’t forget to come back and comment here–it will make tallying entries much easier for me)
Good luck, everyone! Here’s to ending the year with some great new recipes!

I could win whatever cookbook I want???? Wow . . . so hard to choose! I’ve been very into the Tassajara cookbook I have lately, so maybe another one of those????
This has got to be the coolest giveaway!
I’d love to win “Vegan Soups and Hearty Stews for All Seasons.” Soup is one of my favorite meals- you get leftovers for days!
that sure is an impressive cookbook collection!!!! wow, someday i hope to have half of that!!
i would really like terry walter’s clean food or alicia silverstone’s new book!
Vegan Yum-Yum. The photography will be stunning and the recipes all the more worthy, I know it!
I would love vegan brunch. I have almost all of Isa’s cookbooks and I love all of them!
500 Vegan Recipes!
wowsa! there are so many i’d love to check out, but if i had to pick one… ok i can’t right now–go dairy free or my sweet vegan
i love exploring new ways of using ingredients!
You are forcing us to choose? That is a gift and a curse in itself!
I have really been eyeing Clean Food by Terry Walters, but I would love to win Vegan Soups and Hearty Stews For All Seasons by Nava Atlas because I think I would use it more.
Thanks so much!
Thank you for such a fabulous giveaway! I think I would like to win My Sweet Vegan….Hannah is such a genius, I’ve always loved her recipes so I would adore having that book.
What a kind and generous idea, thanks again!
i’d love to have the clean food by terry walters. i just got the art of simple food by alice waters which i love, and clean food seems to follow the same type of philosophy. thanks for the giveaway!
This is such a generous giveaway, thank you!
I would love a gluten-free cookbook. I’ve just been diagnosed with celiac disease and it’s been so difficult managing. A cookbook would really help – I’ve been eyeing The Gluten-Free Almond Flour Cookbook for quite some time now.
Wow that’s a lot of cookbooks! I’ve been wanting to try some recipes from the Urban Vegan.
Oh, the temptation to own another cookbook is too great to resist. I’ve been eyeing The Conscious Cook so I think I’ll go with that. (There are so many new cookbooks lately it’s hard to keep up, isn’t it?)

Oh wow, what a wonderful giveaway! Thank you!
I’d definitely love 500 Vegan Recipes… I’ve head great things about this book and would love to add it to my collection!
I would love to have Eat, Drink and Be Vegan by Dreena Burton, I’ve heard so many things about these recipes and have been meaning to get it!
Added a link at my last post. http://cookeasyvegan.blogspot.com/2009/12/body-snatchers-and-other-testy-things.html
Wow, this is the best giveaway! My pick would be Eat, Drink, and Be Vegan because I know several people who can’t get enough of it. Thanks so much!
I’m dying to own Clean Food! <3
Man, I would love to have so many of these. I have really coveted My Sweet Vegan and The Urban Vegan both since they came out … If I had to pick, I’d probably go with Urban Vegan just because of versatility (no offense, Hannah!)
I am amazed at how many cookbooks you have. That’s nuts! I’ve been wanting to check out 500 Recipes because there has been lots of good reviews.
There are so many but I think I would choose The Conscious Cook by Tal Ronnen.
)
What a generous gift! There are some great books on your list, but I think the one I’d like most is Vegan Soups and Hearty Stews for All Seasons.
Merry Christmas!

mmmm 500 Vegan recipes! I think I am starting to need that many.
I would think your cookbook! I can get others through the library
I would love to win Quick and Easy Comfort Food! Sounds like a good one to add to my collection.
I’d like Clean Food by Terry Walters because I’ve heard good things and I’m not vegan or dairy free!
What a great contest! Thanks for having it
I would like to win My Sweet Vegan by Hannah Kaminsky because I’ve just spent the last five months in Afghanistan and have been unable to find any vegan sweet except sugar cookies. I would love to have some good desserts to look forward to when I get home.
I would like Vegan Brunch. I have several of the ones listed already, and while I love brunch, I don’t own a brunch cookbook. I am a relatively new vegan and I love to cook. Thank you so much!
Definitely “Eat, Drink, and Be Vegan.” I’ve seen so many lovely recipes that are adapted from that book :]
Posted on my blog here – http://diaryofahbear.blogspot.com/2009/12/contest.html
Posted a link on my facebook and on twitter (username:hbhateschicken).
What a great giveaway and an lovely collection of books. I would love to add is Vegan Soups and Hearty Stews for all Seasons.

I’ve been jonesin’ for 500 Vegan Recipes since Celine and Joni began talking about it! Love the “teasers” I’ve seen so far. Thanks!
I’d love a copy of your cookbook Sweet Freedom…need I say more?
~erin
I love you Ricki! This is so cool
I have never seen one of Dreena Burton’s cookbooks (my library system doesn’t have them–boo), but I have heard wonderful things about them. I would be thrilled to own one! This is, of course, only because I already own Sweet Freedom by the one and only Ricki
Courtney
Wow, what a sweet giveaway! How did you know there were so many vegan cookbooks on my wishlist that it started to feel overwhelming?
It would sure be nice to have one less on the wishlist and one more on my bookshelf!
After spending way too much time trying to decide which one was at the top of the list, I simply let my inner cookie monster make the decision for me… and, of course, he promptly said Vegan Cookies Invade Your Cookie Jar was the one I wanted! Ah, dear inner cookie monster…
I would choose The Ice Dream Cookbook! Sounds wonderful, and Claire friendly!
Here’s my mention of the giveaway on Twitter: http://twitter.com/kimianak/status/6871452918
My 6-month old was just diagnosed with a severe milk allergy. Our allergy free house was just turned upside down and we have to start preparing for life with our littlest when he can do table food. The cookbook would help tremendously! Happy Holidays!
Wow, you’ve got an awesome veggie library there.
I’d love the 100 Vegan Baking Recipes b/c I’d like to give it to my sister as a gift. She specializes in vegan baking and doesn’t have that book and I’m sure she’d get some amazing ideas from it. She’s always making gifts for her friends and coworkers and she loves surprising them with the news that her creations are vegan! They’re always impressed.
What a fun contest/giveaway you’re doing!
Posted the same thing I tweeted on Facebook too. Thanks!
Sweet Freedom by Ricki Heller of course! And the reason is because I love your blog and have your book waiting patiently in my amazon wishlist.
wow awesome giveaway! I have been dying to get my hands on a copy of Eat Drink and Be Vegan because I keep seeing recipes posted on blogs and I get angry not being able to make them! But with that being said I have been wanting your cookbook longer and still have not got my hands on a copy so I guess that one wins!
Well, I’d like to win Sweet Freedom! I haven’t purchased it because I am terrified that I would be baking every single day and despite the treats being healthier and refined-sugar free, I’d still be eating them like crazy. But after reading so many rave reviews (and seeing what you’re capable of!), I think I need it in my life.
Vegan Planet… 500 Vegan Recipes… My Sweet Vegan… Sweet Freedom. All on my must have list.
That sounds so awesome! thanks for being such a sweetheart and sharing the love.

I’ve posted about it, and your e-book here

Wow! How generous of you! I absolutely love cook books! I think I must be a cook book fiend!
I would love your Sweet Freedom cookbook!
I tweeted about it too. It’s @intolerancescook.
Sorry about the double twittering post. It didn’t show up the first time. I also neglected to tell you why I wanted your cookbook-I love your website and recipe s and try hard to eat at least sugar-free if not wheat free and dairy free too! I also talked about this on my blog. http://foodintolerancescook.blogspot.com/2009/12/cookbook-giveaway.html
I also told about it on facebook..on my foodintolerancescook page.
I would loooove Go Dairy Free!
What an awesome giveaway. Honestly, the one cookbook I would love to win more than anything else (and will definitely be the next cookbook I buy if I don’t win) is your cookbook, Sweet Freedom.
Thank you for this opportunity! Clean Foods sounds like the book I need. I recently found out I have food sensitivities to dairy and corn. I am looking for books that will help me eat better and feel better. Thank you.
Vegan Yum Yum! Lauren’s our girl and it’s been in long anticipation!
I would really love the large, consolidated edition of Mastering the Art of French Cooking.
It would be amazing to win the Vegan Soups cookbook because I love making huge pots of soup, especially during snow storms!
Mmm… It’s hard to choose but I would say “Eat, Drink and Be Vegan” by Dreena Burton because I’ve heard so many great things about this book and it has been on my wishlist for quite a while now.
Wow, Ricki, what a generous giveaway! How very difficult to choose with so many awesome cookbooks out there. I think the one I’d like to have the most at the moment is Great Vegetarian Cooking Under Pressure by Lorna Sass. My big kitchen gadget gift that I believe I’ll be getting this year is a pressure cooker, and this book would be a great help in getting me started
Hi, BTW I really love your blog (I recently found it). After reading Hannah of Bittersweet blog’s review of your book, I am really interested to get it! I am gluten-intolerant, vegan, and like to alternatively sweeten my desserts, so I think this would be the perfect book for me!

500 Vegan Recipes– I have tried to buy it a bunch of times with my Border’s coupons… but they never have it! I’ve been holding out because I didn’t want to pay shipping on Amazon.
Thanks, Ricki!
I would love to win a copy of your cookbook! It would be handy to have a book of tasty desserts that wouldn’t require a bunch of modifications in my kitchen. Thanks!
Wow… it’s hard to choose, because quite a few of these books are on my wish list. I think I’d pick The Conscious Cook, because I’ve looked it over at the bookstore and it seemed like a lot of interesting flavors and ingredients that I wouldn’t come up with on my own. What a great giveaway!
Is that your bookshelf? If it is, can I come and move in with you?
I would love to get your cookbook, I have been ogling it ever since you started posting pictures of recipes for it!
That said, 500 Vegan Recipes is also on my radar, sounds like a fabulous resource.
-K
How sweet of you to share these with us!
It’s a really tough choice! I think I’d choose 500 vegan recipes because I’ve seen a lot of tester recipes online from it and they look really good, plus 500 is a lot!
I also have to tell you I love all of your recipes! I love that they’re all super healthy and I never have to worry about my food intolerance when I use them, and they’re still delicious! So thank you so much for all of them and I hope you enjoy your holidays!
i’d like to win “vegan brunch” because i just bought vciycj and v’con and i decided to collect all the isa’s cookbooks. good holiday honey, oh, and i was almost forgetting to show you one of your recipe that i tried: http://lilthing.splinder.com/post/21386818.
So many great cookbooks! I have many of them, Sweet Freedom is missing from my shelf. I love your blog and would love to win your book!!
Oh, that’s such a great giveaway
And it’s really difficult to substitute and research all the time, so I’d definitely use the book a lot and probably have my own very personal favourites
Ok, it’s a difficult choice, but I’d like to win “Sweet freedom”, because I’ve been trying to follow some eating guidelines for past several years now and while I can do with not eating some foods (and not even miss them), desserts is something that I just…cannot give up
What a nice thing to do! I do have several of the titles you mention. I haven’t found Go Dairy Free in my local bookstores, so I would choose that.
Holy Cow!! I thought I owned a lot of cookbooks!! I’ve got nothing on you
I adore cookbooks! The Vegan soups and stew one sounds like it would be yummy! Of course, yours would be the best, but not sure if it’s ACD friendly. I just recently read ‘Becoming Vegan’ even though I’m not vegan. It was really interesting. Wouldn’t mind to own that one either! Will try to post about the give away this evening
Although there are cookbooks I would love to have mostly I would like an extra copy of Sweet Freedom to donate to the library. My good intentions of finding out who orders the books there have not happened and if I just give them one they would surely put it on the shelf (and I’m not giving them mine)!

Everyone raves about Eat, Drink and Be Vegan and I am need to try it.

I tweeted!

Such a great giveaway! I would love to win Eat Drink and be Vegan. I tweeted on Twitter!
Your cookbook Giveaway has been noted on today’s post Arroz Clásico –
http://gfedge.wordpress.com/2009/12/21/arroz-clasico/
Oh dear, too many choices! But I would have to say Hannah Kaminsky’s My Sweet Vegan because I am have a mean sweet tooth. Mean enough that I give away most of what I bake because it’s dangerous for baked goods to stay in my house.
Thanks for having this contest
and happy holidays to you and everyone here!
Eat, Drink, And Be Vegan. I’m sad tyo say I don’t own any Dreena Burton books, but she was the inspiration in helping my kids and I go vegan.
I am a fan on facebook! To only pick one, it would def be the Vegan Soups and Hearty Stews by Nava Atlas! I live alone and I am a lone vegan(I actually do not personally know of a single vegan), so to cook big vegan meals would be a total waste of yummy food! Soups and stews are great for me since I can freeze them, or single pack them for lunches!
I tweeted it here http://twitter.com/gomelissago/status/6894563382
I am seriously interested in the Clean Food cookbook. I’m trying to get into the act and am still fairly new at learning what to and not to eat and just thumbing through this book looke like it would really help with a lifestyle change.
what a fun giveaway!! Gosh it’s a hard decision, I looked at Vegan Yum Yum which seems totally up my alley, but I also know I need really easy recipes…so maybe Quick and Easy Vegan comfort food would be a better choice
Link love: http://runtothefinish.blogspot.com/2009/12/santa-says-no.html
What a giveaway! I’d love My Sweet Vegan…I’m a sucker for baked goods and veganizing/finding vegan versions of old favorites has become a hobby.
I would love to win to the Becoming Vegan book because my sister and I just recently tried being vegan and we were doing well for a couple of months but have since fallen off. I would love to give this as a gift to here so we can both start fresh for the new year!
I’d love to win Becoming Vegan! I’m not vegan myself, mostly because I’ve had nothing but bad experiences with vegan analogues to cheese and yogurt and can’t seem to make good food without those. I’d love to have some more basic vegan recipes!
What a fabulous giveaway! I would love to try 500 Vegan Recipes, since it’s the only one on your list that I can’t find in my library or that I don’t already own! Plus, I love Coleen’s blog and recipes so I’m sure that book is fantastic. Happy Holidays!
Oh, my, I would love “Vegan Brunch” – love brunch and their other cookbooks – what a winner!
i dont think i can choose!! too many great cookbooks! you surprise me
Wow, what a great giveaway! Your list of cookbooks is great. I would love Quick and Easy Vegan Comfort Food. Would love to see if I could really get those “down home” tastes. This past year has totally reawakened by love of cooking and am loving trying new vegan dishes and veganizing the old favorites. I love your blog and love your pups!!
~Lolly
So touched to have made your top picks list!
And I’m such a cookbook addict… I would happily take pretty much anything, but I actually have my eye on Raw Energy- It hasn’t yet come out (I think it’s due in 2 days now?) but I’m very curious to check it out!
I would love a copy of Eat, Drink & Be Vegan!
OOOOOh, Ricki, pick me, pick me, please! I would love a copy of Enlightened Eating, it sounds really insightful. Thanks for offering such a great giveaway; I have all 10 fingers and 10 toes crossed.
Sweet Freedom looks like the book for me, that’s always the section I turn to first in the omnibus books.
